I'm absolutely shattered and dripping with sweat, having spent the last 2½ hours steam-cleaning the bathroom. We keep it sort of cleanish all the time, but every so often I notice the tiles have become dingy and it starts looking a little run down and that's when I steam-clean the whole bathroom.

John and Charles have offered to do it, because it takes me so long. John, for example has cleaned the entire kitchen and futility room as well as washing the kitchen floor, while Charles has cleaned polished and vacuumed the dining and sitting rooms, the stairs and the upper and lower hall, both of them finishing before me They can't understand why I prefer to do it myself even though it exhausts me, and I can't bear to tell them that it's because they don't do it properly.

I'm just going to cool down and have a couple of cups of tea while writing this and then I shall reward myself with a lovely long sweet-smelling shower. I do love my beautiful bathroom, especially when it's clean!

We did plan to do it all yesterday, but for various reasons which I won't go into but include such things as people being unable to get out of bed, we didn't get round to it so now we've wasted two absolutely glorious days when we could have gone out somewhere. I mustn't complain, though because John bought us all a very nice Indian takeaway last night so we didn't even have to cook.

Just as I was finishing the floor, John came in to see how the steam-cleaner worked. He alleges that he didn't realise we had one. Since this is the second one we've owned, I find that difficult to credit and it just shows how much attention he pays to what I do and say, and to the evidence of his own eyes.

I wonder how many other people have entirely worn out a Goblin steam cleaner? I prefer the Kärcher we've got now, though.

The main reason why I get so hot doing it, is, of course, the cats. Even though they can go out of their cat-flap, and even though I left my bedroom window open for them to sun-bathe on the windowsill, still they'd prefer to be in the sweaty hot bathroom, until they hear the hiss of the steam and then they run like hell! So mostly I do it with the door closed, just in case of accidents and even though the window is open and the fan on, still it gets very hot in such a small space. I would be so ashamed if I had to take a cat to the vet because he/she had been scalded by my steam-cleaner.

Even though we didn't do any cleaning yesterday, I blitzed my desk again and shredded a lot of stuff and threw a lot of papers, magazines and so forth into the recycling bag. I find it amazing how much dross passes over my desk., and covers up and hides the things I want to be able to find quickly.

I've cooled down now, so I think I shall just nip down to the kitchen to make the meat sauce and the white sauce for the moussaka we're having tonight, then have my lovely shower. I can assemble the moussaka later. I was going to do a spag. bol.,which is quicker and easier, but we have no Parmesan and the shops are shut now.

I shall get on with my scarf tonight in front of the TV;  unbelievably, there are actually two things we want to watch tonight.  It's a bit more difficult to knit than I thought it would be, because it's "fur styled double knitting wool" and it's like trying to knit tinsel.  It's a beautiful bright fuschia, though, so I have to persevere.

I'm a complete eejit.

I made the "moussaka" and just as I finished assembling it, I thought "Oh! Where do I put the aubergines?"

I had made a lasagne BY MISTAKE!! Fortunately I hadn't sliced the aubergines, so I can do something else with them.

Bet it still tasted fantastic though. We had a beef hotpot the quick and easy style. All the veg(unpeeled but scrubbed) are in chunks underneath the meat cut into in thickish steaks and stock poured over.

So you are knitting these days..I did try and get back into crochet last year but my hands kept getting shooting pains.I think one index finger has arthritis or rheumatism on a regular basis. The pain absolutely kills me and I can't do anything until the pain is gone.

I have to be up early tomorrow as we have some new kitchen cabinets being delivered. They reckon between 8 and 1 but that it could be earlier due to 'circumstances' whatever that means.I've never been threatened with something being delivered early before so I shall have to be up early 'just in case'.

I tried to watch Kingdom of Heaven earlier but got halfway through and just realised it was going to end badly for the hero..I just wasn't in the mood for a sad ending.I should have stuck with the Around the World in 80 Gardens programme.

It was a very *nice* lasagne! What a silly woman I am!

I started knitting again in the hope that it might help my hands, but then I don't get pains in any of my fingers, yet, just my thumbs and I remember Grandma knitting with her knobbly arthritic thumbs and wondered if it would help to keep them exercised. I'm only knitting a scarf. I stop as soon as I feel any pain and have a little rest. Anyway, crochet *must* be harder on the fingers.

New kitchen cabinets! There's posh! Where are you getting them from? Who's going to fit them? What are they like?

I was torn between "Kingdom of Heaven", which Charles didn't fancy and the new serial about the surveillance society on BBC 1, straight after "Lark Rise to Candleford" which Charles and I love. I can't remember the name of the serial and the Radio Times is downstairs, so I can't be bothered to go down and look it up.

Don't get excited..it's only a Homebase range.I did originally choose the cheapest but then decided to go for the 3rd cheapest.I chose cupboards with plain wooden doors and no ridges or decoration.I've learned my lesson.I'm not having any drawer units either..they were more trouble than they were worth with the bottoms always working loose and stuff falling down the back and the runners dropping out of place.Only two drawers for cutlery this time.We are only doing one side for now ..The sink will be done later in the year when William has more time.

I was going to go and stay overnight with Mary and see the Russian Art exhibition. Now they have decided that the Futon is too crappy and not safe so I shall just be having a day out instead.Shame as I was looking forward to that.It will have to be next month now though as Mary seems to have a busy February.

There's nothing wrong with Homebase, is there? Everything in our kitchen came from IKEA and John and Charles assembled it(with me as foreman). As you know, I have almost nothing *but* drawer units, but we've had no trouble at all from them, not even in the unit which carries the heavy saucepans and pressure cooker.

It's a shame about Mary's futon. Could you ask her to find you a cheap B&B nearby?

Why don't you and William join the Union Jack club. William is eligible by virtue of his navy service. John is a member and stays there nowadays when he goes down to London for dinners and other occasions where he will be drinking, since he's getting too old to sleep on wardroom floors! I think it only costs about £25 a night, although I'm not sure and I can't ask him as he's out at the moment.

Oh dear! I *do* wish I lived nearer and we could go to the exhibition together!

We stayed at the Union Jack Club once.It was very cheap but comfortable. However I've never actually spent more than a day in London during the last 25 years so it doesn't seem worth joining.

Mark and William have been bonding today while putting up the new wall units.Well at least they are still talking to one another. It's me that they aren't talking to.

Nothing! It's male thing..I'm obviously fussing too much so I'm getting the eyes to the skies treatment.

They will have to talk to me if they want feeding. So I do have the upper hand.

Tell me about it!

Not only do you have the upper hand, but you will shortly have a new kitchen. It's worth putting up with their male "superiority" for that, isn't it?
