I made a mistake when I said that the doctor had only given John paracetamol, because she also gave him codeine phosphate and the two together have made him feel much better, so much so that he's actually been working on Thursday and Friday. He had to take Lucy because his van's in dock, so it hasn't been very profitable, but it's better to undertake jobs when they're offered rather than risk not getting them again.

Yesterday morning I woke up in agony. There was a SERIOUS pain in the right side of my belly. It didn't throb or anything but it was an unremitting pain that just wouldn't go away. I couldn't get to the surgery because I had no car, John had taken Lucy to Peterborough and Ipswich, but in any case I was in that state where you think you're going to die, you hope it will come quickly and you can't face the thought of anyone touching you.

After an hour or so, I started having the dry heaves, dry, presumably because my stomach was empty. It seemed to occur about every half hour and went on for some time. At no time did I actually manage to be sick. It was really painful. I didn't dare take any of my medication, except that I did take my heart pills with a little water and fortunately they stayed down. I had a temperature and I was shivering.

I spent all morning trying not to scream or groan too loudly, and eventually, at about 3.30 pm, managed to go to sleep, probably from exhaustion. When I woke two hours later the pain had completely gone.

What on earth could have been wrong with me?  I know it sounds stupid, but it felt as though a piece of gut had got twisted, or had gone into some sort of paroxysm.  I'm really frightened in case it happens again now, but I don't know how to stop it happening, because I don't know what caused it..

Today I've had a terrible headache since I woke and extremely painful shoulders, the result, I imagine of all that unproductive vomiting.  God, how I wish I could wake up some morning soon and leap out of bed ready for the day, like I used to do up until a short time ago.  You really don't know what you've got until you've lost it..

I've been trying to get on with some housework today, but anything that requires the least effort makes me breathless after a while and I have to sit down for a bit.  The additional pill I've been prescribed has made a little difference, but nowhere near enough improvement to make me feel as I did before 1st. December.  Never mind, I'm seeing my Lovely Lady Doctor again in just over three weeks, so maybe she'll be able to increase the dose, or give me some other additional medication.  Steroids were mentioned, but I hope I don't have to have any of those, because I really can't afford to put on any more weight.

Yesterday and today must have been pretty good for my weight, as I ate nothing at all yesterday except an avocado pear and a peach for supper and I've only eaten a small amount today, just for the sake of taking my pills.  I did think that my blood glucose would be pretty good with eating so little, but silly me, it didn't seem to work that way at all and the readings were the worst I've had for months.  I'm still not hungry, although I've only eaten a yoghurt for breakfast and a couple of slices of toast and a peach for lunch.  We're having a Morrison's curry in a minute, since I was in no state to do any cooking, but I can't say I feel at all hungry and I don't really fancy it.

John is feeling much better though, and even all that travelling doesn't seem to have made his back any worse.  I don't know what his doctor would have said, though, had she known.

I would have felt guilty about lying down in a darkened room on such a lovely day, had the weather not changed every hour or so from brilliant sunshine to monsoon, and back again.  Good grief!  It's just started raining again as I tripe!

Please go and see your doctor about the pain in your stomach. Anything that hurts that badly needs to be checked out, even without the problems you have already.

The first thing that occurred to me was appendicitis - I've had that and it hurts more than I can effectively describe without swearing comprehensively and involved throwing up anything I tried to eat as well, but if yours stopped, it presumably can't be that, which is a good thing - but it could still be a grumbling appendix, which isn't.

I did wonder about appendicitis, but I thought that was on the left-hand side of the gut.

I probably will go and see my doctor this week, if I can get an appointment. She only works four days a week and she's very popular, so it's sometimes a bit difficult. I could see someone else, but I'm not keen on taking pot luck with the doctor I see. I really only like seeing female doctors.

Nope... down and the the right in most people.
Probably just a bad 24 hour bug, but best to get it checked out all the same.

I imagine you'd not be one to confuse the gut and the diaphragm.

I find driving helps my back, now I've got the seat adjusted just so and no longer keep my wallet in my back pocket.

I find John's van excruciating to drive for long because it's not possible to adjust the seat very much, owing to the wire grill behind the seats, but strangely he finds it really comfortable. I always find that I have to adjust the seat in Lucy when he's driven it a long distance and sometimes even the pitch of the steering wheel. He must have shorter calves than I do and shorter arms, too.

And no, I haven't confused the gut and the diaphragm. I'm just praying it never happens again.
